A lift station receiving wastes from apartments and quick-serve restaurants experienced buildup of grease on the station walls and pumps. Additionally, the grease was causing odor complaints from neighbors.
After deciding that weekly chemical and pressure jet cleaning was difficult and expensive, the municipality worked with Aster Bio to develop a biological treatment program to prevent grease buildup and initiate biological treatment upstream of the wastewater treatment plant. The program involved adding a custom microbial and enzyme blend that worked within the short retention time and environmental conditions present in the lift station.
By using a metering pump with the biological product, the municipality was able to prevent grease build-up and associated odors without the need for solvents. Cleaning was accomplished by simply spraying the walls and equipment with pressurized water, easily available at the lift station.
